Hey Rocky... Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!

So last week I allowed a friend to look behind the curtain. She learned some of my best computer tricks. So I thought I would share some of my favs here (in no particular order).

  1. Google no other search engine even compares not even dogpile.
  2. After you realize that Google is the best, STOP using it! Set up you very own customized Google News Page. From here you can search the web or the news. Plus you have the news you want as soon as you open it.
  3. RefDesk.com RefDesk is a good all around reference site. You can search multiple dictionaries and thesaurus (if you know how to say that in plural let me know - HA! maybe I should look it up on one of my great sites I'm telling you about) They will even tell you how to say a word. It has a lot of other stuff on the site that I don't use enough.
  4. Google Part C. Google is not just for searching websites. You can search other things like numbers. Have you got a tracking code for a parcel, but you don't know who the shipper is? UPS? FedEx? It doesn't matter. Just enter the number - Google will figure out the shipper and take you right to the tracking information. Or type in a bar code it will tell you what it is
  5. I'm in the midst of changing my phone book I still sometimes use www.superpages.ca, but I've been using www.canada411.ca lately. Sometimes one has the number and not the other one. What I like about the latter is the reverse look-up feature. If they don't know who the number belongs too it will often give a best guess of the location. eg. this number is assigned to a Roger's cellular customer in Whistler, BC.
  6. Google Part D Google Maps. Just type in your location you can look at a street map, a satellite image or a hybrid of both.
  7. Need to know what's on the tube or when that show is on? Visit Jam! you can search for a show or look at the grid for what's on now or next week.
  8. Want the coolest new beta stuff from google? Check out Google Labs.
  9. Want to understand something in French? Or translate something to German? Babel fish is a great resource. I used this many times in my last job.
  10. Microsoft has a Image Resizer in its XP PowerToys. With a right click on any picture you can make it smaller and emailable.
  11. The final one is an online resource for referencing material - OWL. Sorry I can't find my best referencing website (my link is on a different computer), but there is a cite that you can enter all the info in and it will turn it into a bibliography for you according to the style you want.

So what are your tricks that help you on the web?

Gotta be Google, Part... er... E, I guess... Local Search. I use this one all the time instead of superpages.ca. I find that most web phone directories require exact spelling (and lots of companies go by names other than the one you are familiar with), but Google's Local Search allows you to find all kinds of stuff close to you. Try typing "hotel", "restaurant", or "toy store" along with your postal code and you'll see what I mean.

It's awesome.
