a stampede state of mind
The 10 days in July is not just held at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. It is an event that permeates the whole area. Sure there are alot of Calgarians who avoid the Stampede like the plague, but for the most part the whole city becomes one big party. Boots and Cowboy hats are just as likely to be seen downtown as they are at Stampede Park. Most business are decked out in bales of hay and window painting, even the girl asking if you want fries with that has a bandana on. Churches, Car dealers and Community associations all have Pancake breakfasts. An area downtown turns into "Rope Square". Rope Square has daily entertainment including bands, dancers and of course - pancakes.
