I happened to be in an adult care facility the other day for business and as I was waiting for someone I noticed a BINGO game going on in the next room. What got my attention was the BINGO caller near the end of the game asking "Are there no Bingos yet?" He only had 2 balls left to draw and with a couple dozen seniors playing you would think that there would be a Bingo by now. He pulls the 2nd last ball with anticipation, but still no Bingo. Finally the last ball is drawn and a chorus of 4 or 5 excited ladies yell BINGO!

Unfortunately I had to carry on with my business or I might have sat in on the next round. I think I might have had a chance of taking home some Bingo winnings.

The only time ten turnovers are OK are when you are at A&W. Even then by the time you are eating number ten, your stomach is pretty queezy. Basically the Stamps have had 100 points scored against them in the last two games. Yeah they're playing on the road and yeah they had a short week (the only team to have 3 short weeks this season I might add), but still that does not give you the right to play like a high school team (and a bad one at that). They even made the Argos look good and they had 5 turnovers.

What does it take to lose a game by less than 30 points? We have not even played BC yet. I hope the scoreboard will go that high when they meet later this summer. Maybe they will have to tape a 1 on the scoreboard (like all the gas stations did when the prices hit a buck). At least next week we can stink at home; maybe we injured enough Argos to make the score respectable.

The forecast for the Hat on friday is 39 degrees. I am thankful for A/C!!!! For those who are Celsius challenged that works out to be 102.2 degrees F. I thought those kinds of temperatures are reserved for those "travellers' forecasts" at the vacation destinations. I guess this makes us a vacation destination - just look at the beaches around here :~) So all you Westcoasters out there, cross the rockies and try out our A/C.

So today as we are driving past the mall Bonnie says "hey look, Translink Buses" Low and behold 3 brand new grey Translink buses were sitting in the parking lot of the Medicine Hat mall. Bonnie didn't even think they looked out of places at first. They are really cool looking; the front doors are not symmetrical and the back doors are huge. I was thinking of hopping on to see if it was a 3 zone fair to get to the lower mainland. As we were reminiscing about the good old days, the 3 bus convoy headed out onto the #1 and started heading west. We figure that they must be driving from the New Flyer plant in Winnipeg. I think it is very cool that I have seen the new buses before anyone in Vancouver has seen them.

Training camp opened up today and the Stamps have some exciting prospects for the season. Boerigter is back with the Red & White and the receiving corps couldn't look much better. Henry has some real competition to challenge him. And of course, Ryan Thelwell came over from BC to follow me back to the heartland. Unfortunately, I saw an interview where Mr. Copeland wants to become more of a leader and thus wants to tone down the endzone celebrations, please Jeremaine, keep the drama coming.

June 15th can't come soon enough.

Couple sue Wal-Mart over slip in vomit

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A woman's fall in a puddle of vomit has resulted in a lawsuit against Wal-Mart. June Medema, slipped in the vomit at a Davenport Wal-Mart on June 13, 2005, according to the lawsuit, filed by Medema and her husband, James, in Scott County District Court earlier this month.

Medema claims that she was seriously injured in the fall.

The lawsuit alleges that Wal-Mart's negligence led to Medema's fall, but it does not specifically say how the store was negligent.

John Simley, a Wal-Mart spokesman, decline comment saying he hadn't seen the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that Medema suffered serious neck and upper back injuries in the fall and has undergone several surgeries and is unable to work.

I read this on Darrell's blog today.

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back.

Finally, the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man.

She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night.

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

big action, small time

I had a couple of quick, but action packed moments tonight. First we went to R's first ever recital. His daycare put on a show for all the parents. He was to be there at 6:45 for the 7:00 show. Since we are so far away from his daycare (20 paces or 148 of R's steps) we left a bit early and arrived at about 6:35, by 6:45 Mom and Dad were seated and waiting for the performance to start with all the other anxious parents. We had great seats for photos.

R led everyone in holding Corrie's hand (the director of the daycare). R's group were the first to perform, they did a couple songs. R didn't sing a word, but he stayed up there even after he found Mom and Dad in the crowd.

After his songs were done he came running off the stage to sit with M&D and watch the 2 other age groups preformed their songs.

As we were leaving the evening of mini Mozarts, I looked up to see it was 7:12. WHAT!! that was only 12 minutes long. Good thing, since R's bedtime is 7:00 so we weren't too far off.

B then surfed while we watched Survivor then Todd began surfing as we started watching Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

Medicine Hat is going to visit the big city. The Tigers will be going to the Memorial Cup in Vancouver, but first next week the Big Men will be playing the Tigers for bragging rights when they get to the Memorial Cup.

I am assuming that Vancouver will be beating Prince George tonight since the last update I heard was 4-0 for the Big Men with shots on goals being 32-6.

So the only two teams that I have watched live in the last 5 years will be meeting for the WHL championship.

I sure am glad it's on TV, the flights could get expensive.

Over the past few years every 9 months or so I used to hear the dire warnings from the BC NDP and ICBC stating that the consumers cost for private insurance in the other provinces are growing exponentially. Only the public insurers of BC and Sask can keep insurance rates from growing rapidly. It is always doom and gloom for those poor citizens of provinces with private insurance.

What ICBC and the NDP forgot to say is that if the private insurance rates doubled they still wouldn't be close to the ICBC rate!

Today we had all the necessary out of province paperwork done and went into get our insurance. Being good drivers ICBC (& a private insurer for our comprehensive) gave us an exceptional rate for both our vehicles of $444/month and our private tenant insurance was $41/month. Well, for both our vehicles and tenant insurance we are now paying $157/month. That is a savings of $328/month or $3936/year!!!! And both of our vehicle now have business insurance instead of just one.

The best part is that our broker is still trying to get us some more discounts.

You would expect that the major stores would be the same no matter where you go, but no! We're not talking McDonalds here - the fries are just as salty here as they are in Burnaby. I'm talking about Shell and Stupidstore. I have been a diehard Shell user for years - mostly because of the Air Miles. Well, in the Hat Shell does not have Pay at the Pump (Gasp) So I now find myself fueling up at Safeway instead. I have always disliked the Real Canadian Superstore - not only do you have to pay for your bags, but the stores are always crowded, long lines and the produce is always brutal. Well, not in the Hat. OK they still charge for bags, but the rest of my complaints do not exist here.

I was visiting CFL.ca tonight when the hair on the back of my neck started to stand on end. What I read was that the league had adopted 8 new rules and one new interpretation of a rule. The first thing that went through my head is WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!! Don't be messin' with my CFL! We don't need stinkin' yellow flags for the Refs again. But when I clicked on the link to the article my fears were relieved. All the changes seem to make sense and we are not trying to become un-Canadian. Here's what is changing this season.

Eight rule changes and one rule interpretation to take effect this season

TORONTO (CFL) – The Canadian Football League announced today a summary of rule changes approved by the Board of Governors, effective for the upcoming 2007 season.

After being discussed by the Rules Committee at the CFL Congress this past February, eight rule changes and a rule interpretation were approved by the Board of Governors on a teleconference call yesterday afternoon.

The 2007 rule changes approved are aligned with the CFL’s commitment and dedication to the protection of its players and quality of its on-field product.

“Each year the CFL Rules Committee and the Board of Governors evaluates and discusses rules in an effort to continually improve the Canadian game,” said Gene Dunn, Chair of the CFL’s Board of Governors and Interim Commissioner. “The rule changes implemented this season are intended to promote the safety of our players, while at the same time ensuring our game continues to develop and prosper as an entertaining product.”

The Rules Committee is comprised of representation from each member club, a CFLPA representative, a CFL on-field official and the CFL’s Director of Officiating, George Black.

The 2007 rule changes include the following:

1. Rule 4, Section 2, Article 2 - Illegal Movement

Rule change – adding clause:

“This shall include a “snap down” into a two or three point stance by an offensive lineman.”

This rule will penalize offensive linemen 5 yards for abrupt snap down into 2 or 3 point stance.

Rationale for change – To eliminate a tactic by offensive linemen, solely designed to draw the defence offside.

2. Rule 5, Section 4 – Kick from Scrimmage

Rule change – add as Article 3, and renumber articles that follow:

“Kick from Scrimmage Going Out of Bounds in Flight”

On a kick from scrimmage going out of bounds in flight between the 20-yard lines, the receiving team will have the option of taking possession at the point the ball went out of bounds in flight, or having a 10-yard penalty applied against the kicking team at the point of the last scrimmage, with the down repeated.

Rationale for change – Forces kicking team on punts and field goal attempts to land the ball in the field of play.

3. Rule 7, Section 2, Article 3 – Unnecessary Roughness

Rule change - add sentence to (a) to read:

“Any player in possession of the ball, who falls to the ground without contact and is not attempting to advance the ball, may only be touched down and may not be contacted in any other manner.”

Rationale for change – Player Safety – Players on the ground are in an extremely vulnerable position and should be protected from excessive contact.

4. Rule 1, Section 7, Article 4 – Time in

Rule change – add text in bold as follows:

“After a time out for any reason, time shall start again on the signal of the referee for any of the following reasons:

* When it is snapped after team A commits an offensive foul prior to the snap, inside their own 25 yd line.”

Rationale for change – Eliminate situation where teams deliberately take two consecutive pre-snap fouls in order to run time off the clock.

5. Rule 7, Section 2, Article 3 – Unnecessary Roughness

Rule change – add clause to read:

“Tackling an opponent by grabbing the inside collar of the side or back of the shoulders”

Rationale for change – Player Safety - Eliminating the dangerous “horse collar” tackle.

6. Rule 7, Section 2, Article 3 (h) – Unnecessary Roughness

Rule change - add specific wording:

“Contacting an opponent above the shoulders in an unnecessarily rough manner, including the long snapper on kicks from scrimmage, and convert attempts.”

Rationale for change – Player Safety – Protection for long snappers who are in a vulnerable position when snapping the ball.

7. Rule 7, Section 2, Article 4 – Roughing the Passer

Rule change – Re-word clause (c):

“All rushing defenders must make every attempt to avoid hitting a passer at or below the knees, either if their path to the passer was unrestricted, or if they are coming off a blocker”

Rationale for change – Player Safety – Defensive players must avoid contact at or below the passer’s knees.

8. Rule 7. Section 2, Article 4 – Roughing the Passer

Rule change – add clause to read:

“Contacting the passer if either the initial source of contact, or primary source of contact, is the defender’s helmet”

Rationale for change – Player Safety – Defensive players may not lead with the head or use the head as the primary contact point to hit a passer. Ducking the head and launching at a passer is not acceptable.

Recommended Interpretation Changes for 2007

1. Blocking on Kick returns

The illegal blocking rule states that player can not contact an opponent from behind.

Rule change - To interpret a player having four sides and it is only illegal to contact the player in the back.

Rationale for change - Creates more legal blocks on the side of the defensive player.

Christmas is now kosher (not literally). It seems that Wal-Mart will now have cards, banners decorations, commercials and greeters saying Merry Christmas again. A few years ago in an attempt to not offend anyone (except Christians) Wal-Mart started to only use the words "Happy Holidays" Seasons Greetings" and anything that didn't have the word Christmas in it. So go ahead and take back your holiday tree from last year and get a shiny new Christmas Tree.

PS also just in time for Christmas they are lowering the price on small appliances... always the low price eh?!?

Our puppy dawg had some fun going trick or treating for the first time. I still haven't posted the actual Halloween pictures yet on flickr, but I will soon. I just thought I should post a comment since it is already 5 days ago.

We just went to a few friends houses; so at the first house he got some Smarties. We thought he would enjoy shaking the box in the back of the van till we got to the next house. Well, Mommy and Daddy didn't notice that there was no shaking going on in the back. So at the second house we found one very happy puppy with a half eaten box of Smarties (and I do literally mean box) and a whole lot of blue drool going on.

gopher holes and gridiron

So I have been hearing a lot of whining lately from the stubble jumpers. Apparently there is a lot of complaining that gophers will not be allowed on the field at McMahon for the Western Final. Actually just one particular gopher named Gainer. I can understand the concern of the Stampeders. If you have a Stallion that is ready to run over all the green on the field, you don't want it to trip and fall in a gopher hole and sprain it's ankle before it can run past the Lions on its way to Earl Grey's Frothy Mug.

The Stamps have had a way of getting other teams undies in a knot before their games this year. It look like this time Riderville has its undies in a knot.

I have been noticing a trend lately - everyone has been joining flickr. So I thought that I would share a flickr tip that you might not know about.

If you are uploading you photos to flickr through their webpage... there is a better way. The Flickr Uploadr is a great tool to get your photos into flickr faster. If you're running Windows all you need to do is right click on the photo to upload it. If you're running OS X you just drag the photos into the uploader and click upload. Both uploaders allow you to upload in bulk and add titles, descriptions and rotate photos. There is even a setting to make your photos smaller so if you don't have a pro account you don't use all your bandwidth with 10 photos.

Something else that looks cool is Moo. I haven't tried Moo but it looks great. Moo is a photo service that makes little photos - yeah I know I can print photos and cut them smaller myself, but it looks cool.

So the Eskies have missed the playoffs for the first time since the year I was born (by the way, the Stamps won the Grey Cup that year) Everyone in this town has no love lost for this era coming to an end. This blog isn't about the 'shmoes though, or even the poor decision making skills of some Edmonton coaching staff. No this entry is dedicated to the people of Edmonton.

Edmonton is a sports town!

Congratulations need to go out to the fans of Edmonton for supporting their team.

Last week with nothing on the line and the Esks out of a playoff spot there were still 40 000 people at the game.

Winnipeg, who is hosting the Grey cup in a few weeks, still has thousands of tickets unsold.
Vancouver fans jump on and off the Canuck and Lion bandwagons so often the struts are leaking oil. (pun intended - it might take you a minute)
Calgary fans may not be as fickle as Vancouver fans, but I remember a time, before Doug Flutie, that McMahon Stadium was a very quiet place - you didn't need to worry about the noise by-law back then. Even the Saddledome has seen its fair share of empty seats.

Yet a team with a a 5 and 11 record that won't be playing in the post-season can draw 39,533 people. Way to go Edmonton.

This post is being created on http://doc.google.com. This is an online document and spreadsheet service. So far it looks cool. You don't need Office or any other productivity program, but you can save it in a variety of formats including .doc, .pdf or HTML. It also allows simultaneous online collaboration and you can control who can view or edit it. It seem pretty primitive - (I have not found a spell check yet) So go ahead and give it a try! I can see great potential for people who want to store documents in an accessible place or needs to have people at various locations edit a document (Yes Shar, I'm talking to you and your worship orders). Anyways, lets see if I can get this thing to post on my blog now.

Ok, you may have noticed by now that I am a football fan. But, in the spirit of being Canadian I have joined a hockey pool. Last year I donated $20 to a pool that I came in dead last. Prior to that it has been at least 15 years since I was in another pool. I guess my biggest problem with hockey pools is that the only names I know in hockey are the guys who are on the downhill slide. Sure I know some players, but they are all hasbeens. Gretzky - I think he is a good pick. Same with Yzerman.

So I joined another pool (Wyatt's owner had the ad on his blog - and I need another good beating) the draft was tonight. So here is the line up for Team Last Place.

So have you been to Google lately?? I don't mean have you used Google lately. I don't go to Google very much any more it is integrated into everything. My Mac browsers have Google search engines built right in. My PC has a Google toolbar and a Google desktop. I have Google Earth for my maps. Even the Brain Flatulence has a site flavoured Google search engine (OK, I guess I got rid of it during one of my last updates - as I just realized it's not here anymore). Google has become ubiquitous. So why visit www.google.com? The only time I visit Google is when I am at work where they don't let you have the modern conveniences of the download.

Google now has a personalized page. Just click on the personalize this page at the top right corner. There are hundreds, if not thousands of "gadgets" to personalize your Google page. I have the Comics Foxtrot and Non Sequitur at the top of my page followed by some cool photos, weird news, CFL news, normal news, some quotes, my gmail, PacMan and a whole lot of other weird stuff.

So go ahead and revisit an old friend.
